About Us

The Gilbert and Sullivan Society of Tasmania was formed in 1973 and wound up in 2025. Operating for over 50 years, the Society produced 72 shows of musical theatre for Hobart audiences. Its last production was Trial by Jury in 2020 at the Supreme Court, Salamanca Place.

Hire the Revolving Stage (Revolve)

The Society's Revolve was built for the production of Oliver in 2000 and rebuilt in 2023.

The Revolve is available for hire from Hobart College..

Trial by Jury 2025

The planned production of Trial by Jury in January 2025 was cancelled.

This was due to the unexpected unavailability of cast members and our inability to cover for them at short notice.

Annual General Meeting  2025

The last AGM of the Society was held on February 26, 2025.

There being no nominations for any committee positions, Michael Topfer outlined the
difficulties recently encountered with finding sufficient ensemble members for Trial by Jury
2025 and keeping the society going over the last few years.

The consensus of the meeting was that the time has come for the Society to be wound up. As a result, a motion was put to the meeting, and seconded, that 'The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Tasmania Inc be wound up due to insufficient interest and participation to sustain its ongoing activities, and that the necessary steps be taken to formally dissolve the Society in accordance with its constitution and relevant legal requirements'.

 The motion was carried unanimously.
